GMP expert lecture: Decommissioning of IT Systems

Decommissioning of an IT system needs to be planned in detail. This should be sufficiently known. Aside from organisational measures associated with replacing a computer system, an important consideration is the data that have to be archived.

The approach chosen for archiving is left up to the operator, since only general specifications are defined in the rules and guidelines – such as the consistent of the data and their readability after ten years. Which archiving strategy should be chosen, how are the data to be archived defined, and what data format should be used for archiving?

In examining the lifecycle of an IT system, it is sensible to consider its eventual decommissioning even during the design phase while implementing a new application. The aforementioned requirements of “immutable data” and “guaranteed readability” can be implemented much more easily and efficiently with good planning in the design phase. The subsequent implementation of interfaces to archiving systems is usually complicated and expensive.

In his specialist presentation “Decommissioning of IT Systems”, Dr Georg Schwarz, Principal Consultant at gempex and IT validation expert with extensive know-how, presents possible solutions for how and in what manner data or systems can be archived. He examines the requirements for an archive along with the fundamental preparations for discontinuing a computer system, including a promising data archiving strategy.
